Mental Illnesses Among Teens By: Marc Rowen M. Catangay Mental illnesses are disorders of brain function. They have many causes and result from complex interactions between a person’s genes and their environment. Having a mental illness is not a choice or moral failing. Based on statistics, 1 out of 5 young people suffer from a mental illness. Having a mental disorder should not be any different than experiencing a physical illness. And it doesn’t have to be; you can help make a difference. One type of mental illnesses is depression. It is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
